What better way to see the historic Newport Harbor than on a stand-up paddleboard–which you get to do by participating in the annual Newport SUP Cup! Hosted by Coastal Urge, the Newport SUP Cup challenges you to paddle 6-miles (for the elite division) or 3-miles (for recreation) on a course with a beautiful view of the city of Newport and the historic Newport Bridge, beginning and ending at the Newport Shipyard.
Paddlers will be competing for a $1,000 cash purse for the elite and a $3,000 worth of prizes for recreation. In order to compete, you must have a USCG-approved PFD with you on the race, although you do not have to have it on, it just has to be on your board or person to comply with state and federal laws. This is for your own safety, of course.
Like many SUP racing events, proceeds from the Newport SUP Cup will benefit Clean Ocean Access, a Newport-based non-profit that works to clean our waterways and educate the public about maintaining healthy oceans. In 2014, Clean Ocean Access performed 61 marine debris cleanups, removing 11,272 pounds of debris from 46 miles of coastline (among other activities).
So, if you want to test your SUPing abilities while seeing Newport from a whole new perspective, then the Newport SUP Cup may just be for you. Head on over to NewportSUPCup.CoastalUrge.com for additional information and to register–cost to participate is $75 for the elite and $55 for recreational. Good luck!
